Adaptive Climbing

In our latest episode of the Raising Kellan Podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Mia Fox, a multifaceted individual who is a yoga teacher, physical therapist, and avid rock climber. Mia shared her journey into the world of rock climbing, the therapeutic benefits it offers, and her involvement in the adaptive climbing program at Memphis Rox.

Rock Climbing Clinic @ Memphis Rox(Kellan and Miriam)

Growing up in California, Mia spent her summers backpacking in Yosemite and the Sierras, surrounded by majestic granite walls. It was during these formative years that she developed a deep connection with nature and an interest in rock climbing. Mia's passion for climbing never waned. She found herself returning to it whenever she had the opportunity, eventually discovering the welcoming community at Memphis Rox.

Memphis Rox is not just a climbing gym; it is a beacon of inclusivity and community support located in the heart of Soulsville in South Memphis. Founded by Tom Shadyac, the facility operates on a "pay what you can" basis, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent anyone from participating in their diverse range of activities, including yoga classes, after-school programs, and of course, rock climbing.

One of the standout initiatives at Memphis Rox is the adaptive climbing program, which aims to make rock climbing accessible to individuals with disabilities. Partnering with Adaptive Climbing Group, a nationwide nonprofit, Memphis Rox provides specialized equipment and support to ensure that everyone, regardless of their physical abilities, can experience the joy and challenge of rock climbing.

Mia explained the various modifications available for climbers with different needs, such as seated climbing options, pulley systems to reduce the weight being lifted, and adaptive equipment for those with visual or hearing impairments. These adaptations not only make the sport accessible but also provide therapeutic benefits by encouraging natural movement patterns, weight shifting, and muscle strengthening.

For parents and individuals in Memphis interested in exploring adaptive climbing, Memphis Roxoffers a free clinic on the first Tuesday of every month from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. This clinic serves as a starting point for building a community of climbers with disabilities, where they can learn, grow, and support each other.
